Handwoven Esparto Grass Ceiling Lampshades

Esparto grass (Stipa tenacissima) grows on the dry hillsides of the southern Mediterranean, and these ceiling lampshades are woven straight from it. Compared with smooth rattan, the esparto weave is coarser and more outspoken - the strands stay visible, the surface is slightly uneven, and every shade carries its own earthy, natural tone. That texture is exactly what makes esparto ceiling shades a living part of the interior rather than just a light source.

When the bulb is on, the coarse weave lets roughly 40-70% of the light through and throws warm, irregular shadow patterns across the ceiling and walls. By day, switched off, the shade reads as a sculptural, natural accent above a table or a relaxation zone.

Over a dining table, hang the esparto pendant so its lower rim sits 60-75 cm above the tabletop - the light reaches the table without dazzling the people seated at it. A long table suits two or three medium shades in a row; a round or square table, one larger 40-50 cm fixture in the center.

In the living room, an esparto ceiling shade works best as the warm heart of the space, above the sofa group or coffee table. For high ceilings (over 2.7 m) choose a larger diameter so the proportions do not look undersized, and pair it with softer, diffuse fill light from a table or floor lamp for an even mood.

Esparto fiber is tough and holds its shape, which makes it a natural fit for covered terraces, pergolas and outdoor lounge corners that have a roof and shelter from rain. The coarse, natural weave sits easily with wooden furniture, linen textiles and stone tiles, bringing a holiday mood even to a backyard.

Keep in mind that natural esparto grass is not meant for direct moisture or rain. Use these shades only in covered, dry outdoor areas, and pick a different solution for a fully open terrace. Indoors they feel best in relaxation rooms, a reading corner and the bedroom, where soft, cozy light is what you want.

Most esparto ceiling shades are made for a standard E27 socket. For warm, cozy light that brings out the earthy weave, choose an LED bulb in the 2200-2700 K range - it turns the fiber golden-warm and creates pleasant shadow patterns. Cool white bulbs do not suit this material, as they kill its natural, warm character.
