Helpful guidance
Rattan lampshades are among the lightest yet most durable of all natural-fiber fixtures. Rattan is a solid, fibrous vine that is softened, bent and woven tightly by hand, so each shade is almost weightless yet rigid and holds its shape for years. It is exactly this tight, even weave that sets rattan apart from coarser seagrass or airier palm leaf.
A rattan weave does not block light but lets it flow freely into the room: typically 40-70% passes through the woven openings, and the firm fiber casts crisp, almost graphic shadow patterns on walls and ceilings. In evening light this creates a warm, living mood that a flat fabric shade can never imitate.
In a living or dining area a rattan pendant works as a calm focal point - above a dining table, hang the bottom 60-75 cm above the tabletop so the light reaches the food without dazzling people seated there. For a long table choose two or three smaller shades; for a round table, one larger piece, 35-50 cm in diameter.
Table and bedside lamps suit 20-40 cm rattan shades; floor lamps and large ceiling fixtures, 40-60 cm and up. A handy rule: the shade width roughly matches the height of the lamp base. For a nightstand pick a tighter weave so the bulb stays out of sight when you lie down; for a reading corner, a more open weave that gives more light.
Rattan carries warm, natural tones - from pale straw and honey to a deeper caramel and nut shade. This warm palette is exactly what makes rattan shades so easy to live with alongside earth tones, sand, clay and linen colors. They sit beautifully in boho, Scandinavian and Japandi-inspired interiors, where natural texture is an accent rather than noise.
Place lighter tones against white or beige walls so the weave pattern reads softly; use darker, more caramel rattan as a warm contrast against a deeper wall or wooden furniture. As handwork, each weave and tone differs slightly - a genuine sign of craft, not a flaw.
The tight rattan weave comes to life with warm light. Choose LED bulbs in the 2200-2700 K range with an E27 or E14 socket - they produce minimal heat and bring out the fiber pattern. Avoid halogen and bulbs above 40 W, as excess heat can over time dry out the fiber and make it brittle.
Rattan is happiest in dry rooms. To clean, simply dust regularly with a soft dry cloth or a low-suction vacuum brush; never soak or wet-wash the weave. Keep the shade away from direct moisture and prolonged direct sun so its tone and shape last for years.
Rattan combines two rare qualities: it is very light yet firm and durable, so even a large rattan shade weighs almost nothing and keeps its shape for many years. The solid vine allows clean, defined forms - spheres, bells, cylinders - that hold their silhouette even in generous fixtures.
